Your First Visit

Your first visit to our office typically includes a full series of x-rays that allows Dr. Corbitt to view the structure of the jaw, any bone loss, the position of any teeth that have not yet erupted, malformed roots, and tooth decay.

The initial visit also involves getting your medical history. When you review your medical history, be sure to provide complete, up-to-date information on your health. Inform Dr. Corbitt if you have experienced a recent hospitalization or surgery, or if you have recently been ill. Also tell us the names, doses, and frequency of any medications you are taking — whether prescription, over-the-counter products, vitamins or herbal supplements — and the name of your physician. We use a pharmaceutical program that allows us to enter the name of all your medications, so that we can make sure that none of your medications dangerously interact with one another. Please inform Dr. Corbitt of any changes in your health or medications. This information will help Dr. Corbitt select the safest and most effective method of treatment for you.

Regular Checkups

We follow current pediatric guidelines and encourage regular checkups for children age one year and up. Most people find that it is valuable to have a checkup at least every six months so Dr. Corbitt can:

  • Check for problems that you might not see or feel
  • Find early signs of decay
  • Treat oral health problems early, while they are still manageable
  • Monitor any gingivitis or periodontal (bone loss) conditions that may exist
  • Oral cancer screening
  • Annual VelScope exam (enhanced oral cancer screening)
  • Screen for sleep apnea

Regular checkups include a thorough cleaning, polishing, oral exam and oral cancer screening by Jennifer and Dr. Corbitt. Once a year, a VELscope oral cancer screening is performed on patients over the age of 18. During the oral exam, Dr. Corbitt and Jennifer check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks, tongue and surrounding tissues. At each visit, Jennifer and Dr. Corbitt also check old fillings and restorations because constant pressure from chewing, grinding, or clenching can cause them to wear away, chip, or crack. They also check all tooth structures for any other changes that may have occurred. The depth of all tissue surrounding the teeth are also measured so that your periodontal health can be measured and monitored .

Regular checkup appointments typically take 30 minutes for children and 60 minutes for adults. Patients are seen by appointment only. We make every effort to be on time for our patients, and ask that you extend the same courtesy to us. If you cannot keep an appointment, please notify us immediately.
